CBA keeps rigorous evaluation, monitoring and correction of the environmental impacts arising from its operations in the region. The program includes planning of mining activities, recovery and reforestation of mined areas, adequate disposal of wastes in an adequate containment dam, an effluent treatment station and also the control of dust thrown into the atmosphere.

The rehabilitation of mined areas implies the topographical conformation of the land, followed by vegetation restoration. Seedlings are supplied by a nursery maintained by CBA with a capacity of 100,000 seedlings. The employed species are chosen among native flora as well as fruit trees in order to attract local fauna.

The Mining Department of Itamarati de Minas has created the Centro de Educação Ambiental da Zona da Mata Mineira, the first center for environment education in the so called Zona da Mata Mineira region. The center, which is accredited by FEAM - Fundação Estadual do Meio Ambiente do Estado de Minas Gerais, the local government agency for environment issues, carries out the activities of the Social and Environmental Education Program, developed by CBA, which includes qualification courses in environment education for teachers; students tours, which approach concepts and principles related to the importance of mining and environment conservation; meetings with the local community to share common expectations and to develop community-wide campaigns.

CBA also maintains cooperation plan with several environment organizations, such as the Forests State Institute of Minas Gerais (IEF-MG), for the development of projects aiming at restoration and protection of water springs, matrix trees mapping and seed sampling surveys in local areas, as well as genetic improvement of native species for reforestation.

All such initiatives aim at nurturing cooperation and good relationship between CBA and the community. They certainly contribute for the sustainable development of the region and also for a better Nature conservation.
